Description
During his service Lewis wrote long letters to his family who preserved them. They reflect the progress of his bitter war through the eyes of one who was seeing it at first-hand : the progress of the aeroplane as a fighting weapon, and also the progress of a schoolboy to a mature man. He inherited the traits of the era : reticence, patriotism, and strong principles, and his letters exemplify these attitudes, and how they adapt in the grim situation in which he finds himself. Wing Commander G.H. Lewis (1897-1996) was a British flying ace during World War I. He was credited with 12 confirmed aerial victories.
