Description

Ton-Up Lancs is a welcome reassessment of a study that first appeared in the ‘Claims to Fame’ series.

Since its original publication, additional information and photographs have continued to be sent to, researched, and collected by the author. This wealth of new material made a complete revision necessary, including the addition of a new 100-sortie aircraft and many more photographs of the machines and the men who flew these very special Avro Lancaster bombers.

The history of each aircraft is carefully recorded, supported by accounts from the aircrew who flew them, along with details of what became of these aircraft—whether they survived or not. The most famous example is “Queenie” (R5868), the only surviving aircraft of its kind, now displayed in the Bomber Command Hall at the RAF Museum in Hendon. Like several others, it is associated with some controversy regarding the exact number of operations flown, a subject the book examines in detail.

These controversies are further clarified through comprehensive listings of each raid flown by every pilot and crew between 1942 and 1945. These missions ranged across Hitler’s Third Reich and Northern Italy, included support operations before and after D-Day, and extended to attacks on V-1 flying bomb launch sites in Northern France.

The book also features first-hand accounts of operational flying experiences, accompanied by more than 200 photographs reproduced throughout, many drawn from personal albums and previously unpublished.
