Description
Today's Royal Air Force in Colour is an all colour photo-album of the RAF's aircraft and operations in the mid-1980s. The book is divided into three parts, each covering a major RAF Command – Strike Command, RAF Germany and Support Command.
Strike Command provides the interceptor force, conventional and nuclear attack/strike aircraft, the all-important inflight refuelling facility, the ground support element and offensive support commitment for the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Gibraltar, Cyprus and the Falklands. From bases in West Germany, RAF Germany provides a similar range of roles in support of Britain's permanent commitment to Nato in Europe. Support Command provides the training, maintenance and transport elements.
All roles undertaken by the RAF are dealt with; all aircraft types operating in a role are illustrated; and so, all aspects of an aircraft type's service, roles, functions and operations are covered. Each RAF squadron is illustrated at least once, varying the subjects to illustrate a different aspect of a role or a different operational environment.
The photographs cover the RAF through four seasons, including the different weather conditions; the different regions from Norway to Cyprus, from Germany to the Falklands; major, routine and training exercises; squadron operations, duties and training; base, flightline and field maintenance and re-arming; airfield and battlefield; and take-off, landing, flying and inflight refuelling.
The essence of this collection is that the photographs convey feel and atmosphere not only information and that, uniquely, they are all in colour.
