INTRODUCTION BY COMMANDANT CENTRAL FLYING SCHOOL
AIR COMMODORE S.N. BOSTOCK M.Sc., F.I.Mgt., R.A.F.
It was with great delight that, as Commandant of the Central Flying School, I accepted the task of introducing this biography of the Red Arrows. The book has been produced to commemorate the Team's thirtieth anniversary, but it does not merely celebrate three decades o Red Arrows existence. Throughout those thirty years the pilots and groundcrew of the Team have been called upon to demonstrate a standard of excellence to which all branches and trades within the Royal Air Force aspire. Their performance has been constantly in the public eye, and the Red Arrows have thus been the " shop window " of the Royal Air Force. Moreover, during their many displays abroad, they have been ambassadors, both for their Service and for the United Kingdom. Their consistent exhibition of the highest professionalism, in keeping with their motto ( " Éclat " meaning brilliance ), has captivated foreign audiences, and the benefit to both the Royal Air Force and the United Kingdom has been incalculable. Thus this book celebrates far more than the Team's history, and it is fitting, therefore, that the Red Arrows' thirtieth birthday be celebrated by all who appreciate and aspire to excellence.
( ... ) I am sure that this biography will provide fascinating reading for all those who have even the faintest interest in formation aerobatic flying or military aviation. Is is also a unique reference document on the Team since its birth. I commend it to you. Good reading !
