Description
'It has been described as the most exclusive Club in the world, but the entrance fee is something most men would not care to pay and the conditions of membership are arduous in the extreme.' Archibald McIndoe
The Guinea Pig Club was a unique band of 649 World War II airmen – among them Britons, Canadians, Czechs, South Africans, Australians and Russians – who suffered the worst burns imaginable but miraculously survived.
They owed their lives, to a large extent, to the efforts of a maverick surgeon named Archibald McIndoe. Before the war, no one had anticipated airmen would survive mid-flight fires. Consequently, provision for their care was virtually non-existent. After the war began, their rehabilitation was placed in the hands of McIndoe at a small hospital in East Grinstead in the south of England.
McIndoe, also known as 'the Boss' or 'the Maestro', pioneered a remarkable treatment regime. Unique in his concern with the social environment, or 'holistic care', he enlisted the help of the local civilian population. The group of men became, quite deservedly, heroes of Britain's war.
In a truly compelling history – the first to examine accounts of the Guinea Pig Club held at the Public Records Office – Dr E.R. Mayhew explains the scientific and military backdrop to McIndoe's work. Mayhew details the evolution of McIndoe's Club, his surgical techniques, and the Club's relations and role within the RAF. Supported by gripping first-hand accounts, The Reconstruction of Warriors paints a comprehensive and genuinely moving picture of a remarkable episode in the history of World War II.
