Description

During 1939 to 1945 many thousands of the world's youth fought each other in small fast, agile single-engined aircraft which offered only minimal protection against an enemy's fire, for they were encased in thin aluminium incapable of stopping a bullet. Carrying large amounts of highly inflammable fuel, such aircraft were apt to burst into searing flames or simply explode if hit. One such aircraft was the Messerschmitt Bf 109.

This book is in no way an attempt to record the full history of the Bf 109's technical development or its operational use. Very fine volumes of this nature have already been published, and this book is designed to complement them. Some of the accounts herein first appeared in German publications during the war, hence the reader should be warned that some of them may have been coloured for propaganda and/or ideological reasons. Nevertheless, it was considered useful to include a few such accounts as they were written by first-hand witnesses shortly after the action described.
