Description

The Lore of Flight was conceived as the ultimate single-volume book covering most aspects of human flight. It describes and illustrates not only the history of flying, from flapping-wing bird-men to the supersonic airliners of today and tomorrow, but also how every part of an airplane is made and performs its function. The book contains over 1,000 illustrations, more than half of which are in color, drawn especially for this publication.

THE HISTORY OF FLYING

In this section, we explore how, from the earliest times, humans have longed to fly like birds. On December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers made their first brief flights in a powered airplane, little realizing that within the lifetime of many then living, human flight would surpass the birds, with men outpacing the Sun and reaching for the Moon.

AIRCRAFT DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

Today, airplanes can fly faster than the speed of sound, and the simple wood and canvas aircraft of the pioneers have given way to the most complex metal structures ever produced. In this section, we look beneath the sleek exterior of modern airplanes and learn how they operate.

POWER PLANT DEVELOPMENT

Here, we see how the progress of powered flight has been driven by advancements in power plant design. The history of aero-engine development is given new insight through cutaway drawings that show how different types of aero-engines are built and how they function.

THE ART OF FLYING

This part introduces us first to lighter, simpler, more personal types of flying machines and then follows the story of a typical transatlantic flight by a large jet airliner.

ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIC INDEX

This index complements the text and illustrations by providing detailed explanations of some of the terms used in the book. It includes double-page charts of typical modern civil and military aircraft, drawings and photographs, and chronologies outlining the milestones in the history of flying across major nations.

This unique book is the result of the combined effort and inspiration of more than 30 of the world's outstanding aviation and technical specialists. John W. R. Taylor is the supervising editor of The Lore of Flight. Under his leadership, this team has produced a comprehensive record of human flight, from the time of the bird-men with homemade flapping wings to the supersonic aircraft and space vehicles of today and tomorrow. Mr. Taylor has authored more than 140 books on aviation, yearbooks, periodicals, and space flight, and has been an editor and consultant for aviation for many years.

The Lore of Flight is far more than just a history of flying. The airplanes that have made, and are still making, news are described and illustrated in unprecedented detail. A team of highly skilled technical artists has created line and full-color drawings of the evolution of the major parts of the airplane, from the basic skeleton structure to the engine, which is its heart, and the maze of systems that are its arteries and muscles.

To complement the information in the main body of the book, there is an illustrated encyclopedic index and glossary. Readers who wish to learn can study the construction and function of each component through approximately 1,000 drawings, covering everything from the simplest sailplane and sporting machine to giant airliners and rocket planes capable of more than 4,000 mph. The airline passenger can view a typical transatlantic flight from a pilot's perspective, where safety and speed are supported by a vast array of electronic devices both in the aircraft and on the ground.

One entire section of the book is devoted to power plants, detailing how the aero-engine has evolved from the adapted motor-car engines used by the Wright brothers to the modern jet engine—simple in principle but immensely complex in construction and technological achievement.

For those who simply want to browse, The Lore of Flight is unparalleled. It focuses not only on well-known aircraft and incidents but also includes specially commissioned national chronologies by leading aviation historians, illustrating the universal human desire to fly and how the successful flights of Orville and Wilbur Wright at Kitty Hawk in December 1903 laid the foundation for the great 20th-century aviation and air travel industry.

No single volume can answer every question on a subject as vast as human flight, but it is safe to claim that no other book has provided as many answers, in such fascinating and authoritative detail, as The Lore of Flight.
