Description
In April 1944, the 487th Bomb Group (H) arrived at its wartime base, Station 137, the recently constructed airfield at Lavenham in England. On 7 May, the unit flew its first combat mission.
When the war in Europe ended a year later, the group had completed 185 missions — an average of more than one mission every two days. It was among the few units of the Eighth Air Force to operate both the Consolidated B-24 Liberator and the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress in combat.
During its service, 232 members of the group lost their lives in the line of duty.
This book presents a detailed history of the 487th Bomb Group, covering its activation and training in 1943 and 1944, its combat operations throughout 1944 and 1945, and its eventual disbandment at the end of the war in 1945.
