During his service in the Pacific he saw the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Franklin, bombed and ablaze, survive Tokyo Bay, and has been fascinated by the love of men for a ship ever since. He served as a naval aviator throught the Korean conflict. He resigned in 1954 and began free-lance writing.
