Description
When Mustang Officer Ben Casco assumed command of the flagship-carrier Shenandoah, the crippled ship was under attack by desperate Kamikazes almost within sight of Tobyo Bay. The story of that great ship’s refusal to die-and of Ben’s determination to bring her back-is one of the most stirring in naval lore. The Hero Ship is more than just another novel of war at sea. It is the story of one man’s war with the Navy-of his love and hate for the traditions and values of a now-vanished age. Hank Searls was born in San Francisco in 1922. In 1940, he entered Annapolis. During his service in the Pacific he saw the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Franklin, bombed and ablaze, survive Tokyo Bay, and has been fascinated by the love of men for a ship ever since. He served as a naval aviator throught the Korean conflict. He resigned in 1954 and began free-lance writing.
