Description

In the course of assembling this pictorial walk-around of the great jets, I met a man who flew F-86 Sabres in Korea, whose son flies F-16 Fighting Falcons in Korea. At every juncture, there were reminders that this story leaps across generations – a tale of great planes and great men which covers the full history of the independent US Air Force, including the F-84 Thunderjet, F-86 Sabre, F-100 Super Sabre, F-4 Phantom, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and F-15E Strike Eagle.

The opinions expressed in this book are my own and do not necessarily reflect those of the United States Air Force. Any mistakes which appear in these pages are the fault of the author; but acknowledgment, and thanks, must be given to many who helped.

The reproduction of the color photographs in this book varies in balance and quality, and some transparencies show small blemishes. We make no particular apology for this; the pictures from the 1950s–1970s were not taken by professional photographers during relaxed Public Affairs assignments. The majority of them were taken by squadron personnel on active service, with a variety of cameras and film stock, under widely varying conditions of light, temperature, and humidity; and some are more than 40 years old. That they survive at all in printable form is, in many cases, remarkable.
