Description
This is the sequel to Tim Mason’s acclaimed story of the A&AEE (Aeroplane & Armament Experimental Establishment) during World War II, and it follows developments from the end of the war—the beginning of the end of the piston-engine era and the dawn of the jet age—into the Cold War years.
The aircraft tested ranged from tiny piston-engined trainers, four-engined transports, and a wide spectrum of jets and helicopters, many of which still serve as frontline types with the RAF and Fleet Air Arm. The Ministry of Defence has specially cleared some of the material for publication in this book.
After a flying career of nearly forty years (thirty of them in test flying), Tim Mason retired to focus on his second passion—writing about aircraft. He is particularly well qualified to describe the A&AEE, having served there himself as a test pilot for six years between 1966 and 1976, during which he personally evaluated a number of the aircraft featured.
In the photographs, taken in August 1968, pilot F/Lt Tim Mason is shown between F/Lt David Perry and S/Lt S. Chambers beneath the nose of Avro Vulcan XH539. This aircraft was notably “personalised,” bearing the author’s initials and a “zap” from Edwards Air Force Base. Such unofficial markings by ground crew were short-lived, however, as higher authority intervened after only a few weeks.
