Description

THE BATTLE OF THE CORAL SEA — Robert Taylor

A signed, numbered limited edition commemorating a decisive moment in Pacific naval aviation history.

In The Battle of the Coral Sea, acclaimed British aviation artist Robert Taylor (1946–2024) recreates the dramatic attack on the Japanese light aircraft carrier Shōhō on 7 May 1942.

The painting depicts Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bombers and Douglas TBD Devastator torpedo bombers operating from USS Lexington. Against the deep blue waters of the Pacific, American aircraft sweep over the burning Japanese carrier as columns of smoke rise from the stricken vessel.

The Battle of the Coral Sea marked a turning point in naval warfare: aircraft carriers engaged one another through their aircraft, without the opposing surface fleets exchanging direct gunfire.

Robert Taylor was internationally celebrated for his meticulously researched aviation paintings, particularly his depictions of Second World War aircraft and the people who flew them. His limited editions are especially appreciated by collectors for their historical subjects, atmospheric compositions and original signatures.

A Collectable Signed Edition

This example is number 507 of a limited edition of 850 prints, individually numbered and issued with a Certificate of Authenticity from The Military Gallery.

The edition was signed by Robert Taylor and distinguished US Navy airmen associated with Pacific carrier operations. The accompanying certificate identifies the participating veterans, making this more than a decorative aviation print: it is a collectable tribute to the men who took part in the Pacific air war.
