Description
— The Research & Development Aircraft Collection — The Transport Aircraft Collection — The Missile Collection — The Warplane Collection
The Aerospace Museum began as a regional collection of aircraft maintained by the Royal Air Force and made available to the public on an occasional basis, either by prior arrangement or during Station Open Days. In 1979, the Trustees of the Royal Air Force Museum accepted management of the collections, and since that time the Museum has grown extensively.
At the Royal Air Force Museum’s regional outstation, Cosford plays a number of important roles. As a public display of impressive aircraft, it has no equal in the fields of Transport Aircraft, Research & Development Aircraft, and Captured Enemy Machines. Serving as an extension to the main Museum at Hendon, it richly portrays the history and traditions of the Royal Air Force, British Airways, and aviation in general. Its collection of early missiles and rocketry is the largest and most extensive in the world, and its inventory of aero engines is unique.
On this large site, visitors can enjoy the wide variety of displays made available through the dedicated team of staff employed by the Museum, technicians from the Royal Air Force responsible for aircraft maintenance, and volunteers from the Aerospace Museum Society. On several occasions during the summer, the Museum and Station combine to provide special events and Air Shows, which attract and delight large numbers of visitors from the West Midlands and beyond.
