Description
Between 1918 and 1953 Soviet fighter pilots were involved in no less than ten separate air wars of varying intensity and length. During the Great Patriotic War of June 1941- May 1945 their pilots were credited with more aerial victories than any of the other Allied nations, more than 1,000 pilots claiming five or more victories. The most successful Soviet pilots of these various conflicts included personalities like Ivan Kozhedub, Grigorii Rechkalov, Alexandr Pokryshkin, Nikolai Gulayev, Kirill Yevstigneev and Nikolai Shutt, each of whom was credited with more than 50 individual successes.
Detailed information regarding the activities of these pilots and their units still remain scarce, but this book goes far to rectify the situation. Compiled as a companion volume to Aces High: A Tribute to the Most Notable Fighter Pilots of the British and Commonwealth Air Forces in WWII and Stars and Bars: A Tribute to the American Fighter Ace, 1920-1973, the book includes brief biographies of more than 1,000 Soviet pilots and of the fighter regiments in which they served. The Soviet unit structures, decorations, and the wartime operations to which they relate are detailed, together with explanatory maps and many photographs of pilots and aircraft.
Covering engagements from the Civil War to the Korean War, also included are details of the notable pilots from other nations who flew with their Soviet comrades-in-arms – Spaniards, French, Czechs, Poles and Bulgarians.
