Description
There have been several previous books on the Spitfire, but this is the first major history on the aircraft to appear since the release of the Second World War official documents to the Public Record Office. As a result of a painstaking search through the archives and interviews with some of those involved with the early part of the story, including Beverley Shenstone who worked as an aerodynamicist on Reginald Mitchell's team, Alfred Price is now able to present the most detailed and accurate account ever published on the evolution of the Spitfire.
The book also describes several little-known aspects of the Spitfire's operational career, including the non-stop flights from Gibraltar into besieged Malta over a distance as great as that from London to Leningrad; the highest air combat of the Second World War, put together after interviews with the participants on both sides; and the operations of the Mark 21 Spitfires just before the war ended, during one of which a German submarine was sunk.
In each case the events described are corroborated by official documents written at the time and the text is illustrated by scores of photographs never previously published. The result is an entirely new insight into the evolution and career of the most famous fighter ever to serve with the Royal Air Force.
