Description
SPECIAL DUTIES — Robert Taylor (1946–2024)
Signed & Numbered Limited Edition Companion Print — 201/750
Special Duties is a beautifully atmospheric aviation artwork by the celebrated British artist Robert Taylor, depicting a solitary RAF Westland Lysander flying through a vast expanse of luminous clouds.
The aircraft appears small against the dramatic blue sky, its dark silhouette emphasising the isolation and danger associated with clandestine wartime flying. The subtle contrasts of light and shadow give this composition a powerful sense of depth, silence and anticipation.
Historical Background
The artwork commemorates the hazardous operations undertaken by RAF Special Duties squadrons during the Second World War.
Westland Lysanders of No. 161 Squadron played a remarkable role in clandestine operations over occupied Europe, transporting secret agents, collecting Resistance personnel and recovering individuals from isolated landing grounds in occupied France.
These missions frequently took place at night, often under moonlight, with pilots relying on careful navigation and discreet signals from personnel waiting on the ground.
According to The Military Gallery, Special Duties depicts a Lysander heading towards a secret rendezvous in occupied France in November 1943.
The print was issued as the matching-numbered companion piece to Robert Taylor's larger composition They Landed by Moonlight, released in 2001.
