Description
This ground-breaking work represents probably the most detailed study published in the English language of the still largely unknown subject of the camouflage and markings of the fighter aircraft of the Voyenno-Vozdushne Sili the Soviet Air Forces during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45.
The author, Erik Pilawskii, a scholar of Russian aircraft of the Second World War, has undertaken many years of research to produce this book. He commenced his study in the former Soviet Union in 1987, having been granted access to previously inaccessible key Soviet archival collections.
The reader will find a detailed analysis of the developments, trends, patterns and irregularities of the colour systems as seen on Russian fighters and is offered a fascinating insight into the workings of the Soviet manufacturing system essentially the various Zavod or State Aviation Factories responsible for this task.
There are technical studies of each of the main fighter types and variants including the Lavochkin LaGG-3, the Lavochkin La-5, -5FN and -7, the Mikoyan and Guryevich I-200, MiG-1 and -3, the Polikarpov I-15, I-152, I-153, the Polikarpov I-16, the Yakovlev Yak-1, Yakovlev Yak-7, UTI-26, Yakovlev Yak-9 and Yakovlev Yak-3 as well as notable prototypes and developmental aircraft. Variants, weapons and equipment are all detailed. Each technical description is supplemented by an in-depth analysis of camouflage and markings - factory-applied, field variations and seasonal.
The text is supported by hundreds of rare and previously unpublished photographs and more than 40 detailed full-colour artwork subjects. Furthermore, hundreds of colour illustrations portray the immense variety of patterns related to this fascinating subject.
This book will be of essential use to all students of World War Two aviation, Soviet air power and modellers of Russian aircraft;
0f Polish and Belorussian descent, Erik Pilawskii was born in the USA, but has lived mostly in Europe. As a pilot, he inherited his passion for aviation from his grandfather, who was a racing pilot during the 1920s and 1930s.
He started to conduct serious research into the VVS in the former Soviet Union in 1987. Having made valuable contacts there, he was granted access to key archival collections which made this book possible.
He is actively involved with several aviation museums around the world, working with the staffs on historical aspects of the Soviet aircraft within their collections.
As a keen walker, he enjoys hiking and has been working with groups in Russia to establish a Historical Long Walks society, in the hope that such work will promote some of the battlefields of the Great Patriotic War as registered walks.
He works as a senior IT engineer and also enjoys aircraft modelling as an extension of his interest in VVS aviation.
