Description
'...SO FEW'
Writer Roland 'Bee' Beamont in this popular edition of a book described by The Financial Times as 'probably the most expensive book in the world'. The original was produced in a limited edition of 401 copies each priced at £1,600. All the proceeds went to the RAF Benevolent Fund, raising over one-third of a million pounds.
The book is the brainchild of Michael Pierce. As a boy he watched the Battle of Britain raging over the Sussex downs, and it made a lasting impression on him. Unquestionably the most important single battle ever fought by Britain, it was a triumph of what Sir Winston Churchill called 'the Few' against the might of Hitler's Luftwaffe. In 1988, with the 50th anniversary of the great battle imminent, Pierce wondered what he could do to honour 'the Few'.
The result is a book to treasure and to pass on to your grandchildren. It comprises the individual thoughts and feelings of 25 surviving Battle of Britain aircrew and includes a silhouette portrait of each man as he is today, together with, where possible, a photograph of him taken in 1940, a handwritten reminiscence bringing those hectic days powerfully to life, and a photograph of personal memorabilia telling its own story.
This edition has been produced by W H Smith in order to bring '...so few' to a wider audience and to continue to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund. Lord Barber, Chairman of the Fund, writes, 'Just as the Battle of Britain gave the Few a unique opportunity to serve the many, so has this book given an even smaller group of survivors of that gallant band their chance to help the entire RAF family, through the Benevolent Fund. I know that it will also bring pleasure to the many who will buy it.'
'Every hour of every day was an unforgettable experience shared with some of the finest characters that ever existed'
- Paddy Barthropp
“Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”
