Description
Reichsmarschall Goering was demanding a long range escort (strategic) fighter to equip the elite "zerstorer" formations he was planning. The plane was to be capable of cutting a path for bomber formations through enemy airspace, eliminating fighter opposition, and accompanying bombers to and from the target. The plane would require speed, distance, and manoeuvrability. But each requirement could only be fulfilled at the expense of another and the Bf-1 10, because of the necessary compromises, was a disastrous failure in that role. (No large strategic fighter design was successfully developed during WW II.)
When the Bf-110 was withdrawn from front line fighter duties, however, and reassigned as a ground attack fighter-bomber, it shone. In this role, and as a defensive weapon against bombers, the Messerschmitt Bf-110 became a mainstay of the German air force.
