Description
Aviation book
Initially viewed with scorn, Republic's F - 105 Thunderchief married a heavy powerplant with a sophisticated weapons system. She was eventually loved by those who used her and went on to serve the U.S.A.F. for 25 years during a period which included, in Vietnam, the greatest war of the era. The ’ Thud ’ was one of the most active aircraft in the war, F - 105D's dropping ordnance in the strike fighter role and then F - 105F's and F - 105G's making SAM - suppression their forte in the Wild Weasel role. The F - 105 was no slouch as a fighter either, accounting for dozens of MiG's ; and she was tough too, surviving some extensive damage that would have destroyed lesser breeds. In short, the Thunderchief was one of the greatest.
Doug Richardson is an author specialised in military aviation. He has published several books over this very subject, such as Modern Fighting Aircraft : Tornado ( 1986 ), Grumman F - 14 Tomcat ( 1986 ), Boeing B - 17 Flying Fortress ( 1997 ) and Stealth Warplanes ( 2001 ).
