Description

How did the Italian Air Force, once world-renowned for its altitude and speed records, end up as the scapegoat of the Axis powers?
This captivating book retraces the operational history of the Regia Aeronautica across all theatres of war—from Ethiopia and Spain to China and WWII. Shattering traditional wartime propaganda myths, the author restores the narrative of the Italian airmen, proving they were highly skilled, dedicated, and courageous aviators. Despite poor supplies, flawed leadership, and outdated strategy, they fought with unmatched professionalism in legendary aircraft like the Macchi C.202 and the S.79 torpedo-bomber.

The Author

Chris Dunning has been interested in World War Two aviation since he was old enough to read.

He worked in finance and insurance administration, then as a postman until his recent retirement. As a teenager he began writing short stories, then contributed to professional magazines, eventually writing reports for Air Britain and articles for aviation magazines. Following publication of his early research, a booklet study of the Armee de L'Air, he concentrated on the Italian Air Force, an arm which he felt had not been given a fair hearing in the English press. The resulting Combat Units of the Regia Aeronautica expanded into the extremely successful and highly regarded Courage Alone - The Italian Air Force 1940-1943 (published 1998).
