Description
The Allied bombing campaign directed against Nazi Germany’s war economy was a unique event in history and is likely to remain so. It marked the first time that military forces attempted large-scale destruction from the skies, and with advancing technology, such massed bomber formations have not been required in the same way since.
The strategic air offensive was not a heavily photographed campaign. Official film of aircraft, personnel, and operations was limited by the intensity of wartime conditions and the frequent night-time nature of missions. Private photography was often discouraged, though it did exist, and it has helped later generations better understand how the bombing squadrons operated. This pictorial record aims to convey the atmosphere and drama of those operations.
Roger Freeman has drawn extensively on national and private collections to illustrate the actions of British and American air forces as the war was carried into the industrial heart of the Third Reich. More than 250 photographs bring the reader into the strategic air offensive that undermined Germany’s war effort, reduced resistance to Allied ground operations, and hastened the end of the 1939–1945 conflict.
