Description
Published in Prague in 2002 by J. Kytka, Polikarpov I-16 – The History of a Revolutionary Aircraft is a richly illustrated historical and technical monograph devoted to one of the most innovative fighter aircraft of the 1930s and the Second World War.
Designed by Nikolai Polikarpov and introduced into service in 1934, the I-16 was a revolutionary Soviet fighter, combining a cantilever monoplane configuration, retractable landing gear and compact construction at a time when biplanes still dominated military aviation.
This comprehensive study traces the development, production and operational history of the Polikarpov I-16, from its pioneering beginnings to its extensive service during the Spanish Civil War, the Sino-Japanese War, the Soviet-Japanese border conflicts and the Second World War.
The book examines the aircraft's numerous variants, technical evolution, operational capabilities and combat performance. Particular attention is given to its service with the Soviet Air Forces, the Spanish Republican Air Force and the Chinese Air Force, as well as its encounters with German and Japanese fighters.
Its extensive photographic and illustrative documentation includes approximately 280 historical photographs, 128 colour aircraft profiles, scale plans, cutaway drawings and extracts from original technical manuals.
These materials provide valuable information on camouflage schemes, national markings, individual aircraft, equipment and technical details, making the publication especially useful to aviation historians, military aircraft enthusiasts and scale modellers.
Originally researched and published in French, this is the English-language edition translated by Brinsley Best, with contributions from several recognised specialists in European and Soviet aviation history.
A substantial reference work on an aircraft that played a major role in the transition from biplane fighters to the modern generation of combat monoplanes.
