Description
SHIELD AND STORM reveals the personal experiences of some of the British and American pilots who served in the Gulf War, flying a variety of British Aerospace aircraft—Tornados, Jaguars, and Harriers.
This book is a collection of interviews with these participants and some of the ground support staff, whose stories are told in their own words, from when they first heard of their deployment to the Gulf until the end of the hostilities. Their experiences of arriving in foreign countries that were totally unprepared at the start to accommodate them, of establishing their own bases and modus operandi, of flying endless sorties, and of coping with the many pressures of modern air combat are vividly portrayed.
SHIELD AND STORM does not question the rights or wrongs of the Gulf War but presents the human story of some of the combatants. In so doing, it also highlights the underlying similarities between the American and British behaviors in war, which are often concealed by apparent differences.
Author:
JOHN GODDEN worked in the Public Relations Department of British Aerospace (BAe) at Kingston, Surrey, for nearly 14 years. Starting as a PRO, he was promoted to Deputy PR Manager before becoming Public Relations Manager. His many responsibilities included the production of BAe magazines and videos. He also accompanied the RAF's Red Arrows on their first visit to the former USSR.
Since leaving BAe, he has finalized SHIELD AND STORM and produced other written material for publication. He is an experienced journalist, gaining his experience on local newspapers before moving to a specialist international daily newspaper.
JOHN GODDEN is the editor of Brassey's best-selling Harrier: Ski-Jump to Victory, which told of pilots' experiences in the Falklands conflict. He has now turned his attention to the Gulf War and brings to life the personal experiences of some of those involved.
