Description

Conceived to meet the needs of the British Royal Air Force at the beginning of World War II, the North American Mustang developed into the finest Allied fighter aircraft of the conflict.

Although it was produced by a company with little previous experience in combat aircraft design, the Mustang embodied innovative technology and manufacturing techniques. When eventually combined with the excellence of the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, it became a formidable, fast, manoeuvrable, and long-range fighting machine.

Its exceptional performance enabled Eighth Air Force bombers to penetrate deep into Germany with continuous fighter escort throughout their missions.

In peacetime, the Mustang formed the backbone of many smaller air forces and became a natural choice for air racing and record-breaking attempts. It even gained renewed interest as the Enforcer, a turbine-engined ground-attack aircraft derived from the original design.
