Description
The Artwork
A remarkable Second World War aviation scene by acclaimed British artist Robert Taylor (1946–2024), Out of Fuel, and Safely Home captures the dramatic return of an American Eighth Air Force B-17 Flying Fortress following an eight-hour combat mission over occupied Europe.
Badly damaged by enemy action and desperately short of fuel, the bomber makes a forced landing in a golden English cornfield. A pair of P-51 Mustang fighters provides a final escort as the crew brings its aircraft safely down on friendly soil.
The composition beautifully contrasts the tension of aerial warfare with the warmth and tranquillity of the English countryside. Taylor's characteristic attention to aircraft detail, natural light and atmospheric perspective makes this an especially evocative work.
Robert Taylor — The Artist
Robert Taylor (1946–2024) was one of Britain's most celebrated aviation artists. His career helped establish historical aviation painting as a recognised and highly collectable genre of military art.
Renowned for his meticulous historical research and exceptional ability to portray aircraft in flight, Taylor developed a distinctive style combining technical precision with dramatic skies, natural landscapes and authentic wartime atmosphere.
His paintings and limited-edition prints are represented in private collections and aviation museums worldwide. Many editions are particularly sought after because they carry the original signatures of military aviators who witnessed or participated in the events commemorated.
