Description
OLD TIGER AND A NEW PONY
The P-51B Mustang illustrated as "DING HAO" (Good Luck) flown by former Flying Tiger ace and eventual 356th FS CO Major Jim Howard. Although "DING HAO" has the natural metal finish and typical white I.D. markings of USAAF ETO single-seat fighters, the white paint on the nose and wingtips does not extend back to the exhaust ports, as was standard on the Mustangs used in the following months. "DING HAO" has three reversed swastikas below the windscreen and would later display Howard's total of six Japanese and seven German victims.
The major led his own men on the famous escort mission of 11 January 1944, to strike the Third Reich's Halberstadt and Oschersleben aircraft factories. While temporarilty separated from his squadron, the China ace single-handedly held off over thirty enemy aircraft in several different encounters and shot down four of the Luftwaffe interceptors. For his extraordinary skill and bravery, Howard was awarded the Medal of Honor, one of only two fighter pilots in the European theater to receive the decoration.
