Description
Night Airwar tells the story of the development of night air warfare over Western Europe during the Second World War, through the words of the veteran aircrew themselves.
The night air war over Western Europe was the longest, most intensive, and most costly aerial campaign the world has ever witnessed. Theo Boiten recounts this often harrowing, sometimes inspiring story using the personal accounts of more than seventy veterans from both sides.
In order to convey the emotions of Commonwealth, RAF, and German night fighter crews, the author carefully selected seventy-one personal narratives from airmen who faced each other in the dark skies over the Third Reich. These testimonies were gathered through dozens of interviews and extensive correspondence with over a hundred aircrew veterans. The aim is to capture their lived operational experiences with authenticity and depth.
These compelling first-hand accounts form a moving portrait of a generation of airmen. They recount hopes and fears, successes and failures in combat, as well as remarkable feats of airmanship. They also reveal the realities of comradeship and loneliness, dedication to duty, patriotism, heroism, and sacrifice—alongside stories of survival, injury, and death, whether sudden or prolonged.
Illustrated with numerous rare and previously unpublished photographs from the veterans’ personal collections, Night Airwar stands as a valuable record of this significant chapter in twentieth-century history.
