Description
WHEN THE STORM DIES—In the summer of 1944, Major Iwashi took command of the newly designated 22nd Sentai, the elite regiment which would take their superb new Nakajima Ki.84 HAYATE (Hurricane) into the new offensive in central China. So stunning was Iwashi's success, his unit would be one of only four Army flying units, and the sole fighter regiment to be permitted use of the royal sacred chrysanthemum for their personal insignia.
However, the honor was all too fleeting. As of late September, Iwashi's regiment transitioned from the tenuous offensive in China to the fateful defense of the Phillippine Islands. The American invasion was spearheaded by a well trained, well equipped carrier air wing storming over the Marianna Islands and central Phillippines in far more numbers than ever encountered to date. Despite an influx of JAAF Hayate units joining the 22nd Regiment in the great battle, they were quickly overwhelmed. After the fall of the Phillippines and subsequent full retreat to the home islands, the last of the venerable Hayates would languish in reserve for the final invasion which would never be.
