Description
Fighters at the end of the 20th Century are now among the most advanced aircraft in the world. Equipped with a bewildering array of radars and sensors for surveillance they are also active and passive in the role of interception and attack as countered to carry weapons systems for various ground attack countries, for roles as Modern Fighters Part 2 gives a detailed account of the latest aircraft in service and under development. Many of these machines have seen action in the wars in the Middle East and South-east Asia, which have become the proxy trial of Soviet and Western weapons, technology and tactics.
Among the types described are the MiG-21 Northrop F-5 Freedom Fighter and the ubiquitous McDonnell Douglas Phantom II. The Panavia Tornado multi-role aircraft is destined to be the European fighter of the future. It is expected to enter service some time in 1984. Although with the current emphasis on defence it may begin replacing the British Lightning even sooner. The Tornado is covered in this book, as is the closely-guarded Dassault-Breguet Mirage 4000.
