Description
MISSION BEYOND DARKNESS — Robert Taylor (1946–2024)
Signed Limited Edition Aviation Lithograph — With Certificate of Authenticity
Mission Beyond Darkness is a dramatic and historically significant aviation artwork by renowned British aviation artist Robert Taylor, commemorating one of the most extraordinary rescue operations of the Pacific War.
This limited edition lithograph bears five signatures, including that of Robert Taylor and four American naval aircrew, and is accompanied by its original Certificate of Authenticity issued by The Military Gallery.
The Historical Event — 20 June 1944
The painting captures a dramatic episode at the conclusion of the Battle of the Philippine Sea, during the Second World War.
On the night of 20 June 1944, American carrier aircraft were returning from their attack on Admiral Jisaburō Ozawa's Japanese fleet. Many were desperately short of fuel, and darkness made finding their aircraft carriers extremely hazardous.
Vice Admiral Marc Mitscher made the remarkable decision to order the ships of Task Force 58 to illuminate their decks and switch on their searchlights, despite the danger of revealing the fleet's position to enemy submarines.
In the foreground of Robert Taylor's painting, a pilot and his gunner are rescued from their ditched Curtiss SB2C Helldiver as a Fletcher-class destroyer approaches through the dark waters.
In the background, the illuminated warships of the American fleet emerge from the darkness, creating a dramatic contrast between the peril facing the aircrew and the extraordinary rescue effort.

-
Air Gunner James Curry — Curtiss Helldiver crew member

Their signatures give the artwork an additional historical dimension, making it particularly appealing to collectors of naval aviation history and wartime autographs.
