Description
This is the fourth and final volume in the chronological study of the Messerschmitt Me 262, and it concludes the work by focusing on the last, desperate days of the jet's daylight combat operations during April and May 1945. Using rare eyewitness accounts, the authors portray both sides of the air war between the Me 262 and Allied piston-engined fighters and bombers.
F/L M. Gorzula, 309 (Polish) Sqn, RAF, 9 April 1945:
“I closed on the Me 262 from above, my airspeed at 500 mph and my engine whining away at top pitch. At that moment he saw me and was pulling away. I boosted my engine once more and got a little closer.
Getting my sights on him, I gave him a short burst, added a little correction and gave him a longer burst, and then another. My tracer was right on him and the next moment he began to slow up. As I closed, I gave one last burst of gunfire. There was a flash as the Me 262 broke in two and began to spin, bursting into flames.
One of its engines broke away and spun crazily downwards. I then saw, as I closed, the pilot's parachute opening amidst the wreckage. Next moment the fabric burst into flames. He had ‘bought it’.”
Oblt. Heinrich Haefner, 2./KG 51, Sunday, 6 May 1945:
“During the afternoon the weather improves... I take off at 16.19 hrs with 24 × 55 mm rockets, two cannon loaded with 100 rounds of 3 cm shells and 500 kg of bombs.
Shortly after take-off, I hear on the radio that we were to call off the attack on Brünn and instead were to attack elements of the Vlassov Army on the road from Pilsen to Prague. After the attack, all aircraft were to return to Prague. I changed course and looked for the road from Pilsen to Prague. Soon I saw the vehicle and tank columns of the Vlassov Army. In a low-level attack, I dropped canisters of anti-personnel bombs. During my second attack, I used my rockets against trucks and tanks. During my third attack, I emptied my cannon. Many trucks were in flames. At least 30 Me 262s participated in this attack.”
Also included in this volume is an in-depth look at various high-speed and swept-wing variants and projects, as well as a detailed study of American, French, British, Czech and Japanese post-war testing, evaluation and production.
This final aspect of the Me 262 story is complemented by many rare photographs taken both in Germany and overseas, together with accompanying full-colour artwork.
