Description
The P-47 Thunderbolt ( nicknamed the ''Jug'' ) first saw action in Europe in November 1942 with the U.S. Eighth Air Force. It was used for high altitude escort duties, bombing, and fighter sweeps. While the ''Jug'' was heavier and less maneuverable than the German fighters, it had greater fire power and could outdive them.
The ''N'' model, final in this series, was designed specifically for escorting B-29 bombers from Saipan to Japan in the Pacific theatre. It was more maneuverable and faster than earlier models.
At the end of World War II the Thunderbolt had the highest box score of all allied fighters.
