Description
The Yak-9 was the most numerous and most successful fighter of WWII in the Soviet Army. The standard type was developed in 1942 by Alexander S. Yakovlev's Design Bureau. It used in main fighter as the main design basis for the new type. The Yak-9T, a heavier version, was designed in March 1943. Its main armament was the 37 mm automatic cannon NS-37 and the UBS machine gun. The one meter forward moved cockpit position of the cockpit was the basic distinctive feature which separated the Yak-9T from previous modifications. Since it was important to maximize production and to facilitate serviceability this cockpit feature became standard for all subsequent Yak-9s. Flight and armament characteristics of the Yak-9T and other flight characteristics were similar to those of the earlier and lighter Yaks. With such a powerful armament the Yak-9T was particularly effective in the interception and ground attack roles. The Yak-9T was in service with the Soviet and Polish Air Forces, and also the Free French air Regiment Normandie-Nieman. Armament: 1x37 mm NS-37 cannon, 1x12.7 mm UBS machine gun.
