Description
The Yak-9 was the most numerous and most successful fighter of WWII to serve in the Red Army. The standard type was developed in mid of 1942 by Alexander S. Yakovlev's Design Bureau. It used the Yak-7 fighter as the main design baseline for the new type. In 1944 the Yak-9T, which had already proved itself in countless combats, was experimentally equipped with the automatic 45-mm NS-45 cannon. Service trials were held to test the armament and also to reveal the flight characteristics of the aircraft when targets were engaged with its 45mm shells. The new version was called the Yak-9K and serial production began following the successful completion of the trials. In active service it became rapidly evident that the new fighter was a particularly formidable weapon when deployed against large enemy bomber and fighter formations. It also enjoyed success in the ground attack role - its high velocity 45-mm shells were able to penetrate armour and destroy almost every type of tank the Nazis possessed. Pilots on reconnaissance were able to attack and destroy at will. The Yak-9K was fitted with the most powerful armament of any mass produced single-seat fighter of the WWII period. It was a truly terrifying opponent. Technical and tactical specifications Yak-9K Length (with cannon), m - 8,87 Span, m - 9,74 Start weight, kg - 3.246 Maximum speed, km/h - 573 Ceiling, m - 8.600 Range, km - 1.300 Armament: 1x45 mm NS-45 cannon, 1x12,7 mm UBS machine gun.
