Description
The Yakovlev Yak-3 was one of the most effective Soviet fighter aircraft of the Second World War. Developed from the Yak-1 and Yak-9 series, it entered service in 1944 and was optimized for low- and medium-altitude combat, where most air battles on the Eastern Front occurred. The Yak-3 featured a lightweight, mixed construction with a shortened wing and improved aerodynamics, giving it outstanding maneuverability, rapid acceleration, and excellent climb performance. Powered by a Klimov VK-105PF-2 engine producing about 1,300 hp, it could reach speeds of up to 650 km/h. Armament typically consisted of one 20 mm ShVAK cannon and two 12.7 mm UBS machine guns. Highly praised by Soviet and Allied pilots, the Yak-3 was feared by German fighter units and played a key role in achieving air superiority during the final stages of the war.
