Description

The unsatisfactory state of Soviet fighter aviation by the late 1930s forced an acceleration of work on new aircraft types. Along with established design bureaus, many new teams were involved, including those led by former designers of A.S. Yakovlev, who had previously focused mainly on training aircraft. The key requirement for the new fighter was simplicity combined with adequate combat performance. Yakovlev’s project, designated I-26, featured a mixed construction: a welded steel-tube fuselage, wooden wings and tail, with plywood and fabric covering. It was initially planned to use the M-105TK engine with a turbocharger. Despite incomplete testing, the aircraft—later named Yak-1—was approved for mass production in 1940. Early production required constant refinement. From 1941, Yak-1s received the M-105PF engine (1,100 hp), improving speed and climb. The aircraft reached 5,000 m in 5.7 minutes, had a ceiling of 10,500 m, a range of 700 km, and was armed with one 20-mm ShVAK cannon, two 7.62-mm ShKAS machine guns, and six RS-82 rockets.
