Description
The Vought XF5U-1 was a highly unconventional experimental fighter developed by Vought during the 1940s for the United States Navy. Nicknamed the Flying Flapjack due to its nearly circular wing design it aimed to combine very low takeoff speeds with high top speed performance. Powered by two radial engines driving large contra rotating propellers mounted at the wingtips the aircraft was designed to achieve exceptional lift and maneuverability. Its unique shape reduced drag while allowing operations from short carrier decks. Although wind tunnel tests and a prototype showed promising results the project was ultimately cancelled in 1947 as jet aircraft rapidly made piston powered designs obsolete. Despite never entering service the XF5U 1 remains one of the most innovative and unusual aircraft concepts ever built and demonstrated bold aerodynamic thinking that influenced later experimental aviation research.
