Description
The Westland Wyvern was a British carrier-borne strike aircraft developed by Westland Aircraft for the Royal Navy. First flying in 1946, it was powered in service by a powerful Armstrong Siddeley Python turboprop engine driving contra-rotating propellers. Its distinctive nose intake and large propeller gave it a unique appearance. Designed for ground-attack and anti-shipping missions, the Wyvern could carry bombs, rockets, or torpedoes under its wings. Entering squadron service in the early 1950s, it saw combat during the Suez Crisis in 1956, operating from Royal Navy aircraft carriers.
