Description
The Westland Lysander was a British army cooperation and liaison aircraft designed for short takeoff and landing operations. Entering service in 1938, it featured excellent low-speed handling, high-mounted wings, and fixed landing gear with spats, allowing it to operate from improvised airstrips. Powered by a Bristol Mercury radial engine, it reached a maximum speed of about 340 km/h. Initially used for reconnaissance and artillery spotting, it proved vulnerable during early World War II operations. It later gained fame for special duties with the RAF, inserting and extracting agents behind enemy lines. Armament included machine guns and light bombs.
