Description
Although Supermarine is best known for the Spitfire, it primarily produced flying boats until the end of WWII. In the 1930s, Australia requested an advanced maritime patrol aircraft, leading to the Seagull Mk V. The RAAF received 24 of these biplanes, featuring an all-metal hull and Pegasus pusher engine. Improved versions were named Walrus Mk I and served with the Royal Navy for spotting and reconnaissance. During WWII, Walruses took on escort, air-sea rescue, and even bombing roles, excelling in battles like Cape Matapan. Saunders-Roe built the Mk II with a wooden hull for training. The type served globally, even postwar, with military and civilian users.
