Description
The Vought F4U Corsair was one of WWII’s top fighters. The F4U-1D, introduced in April 1944, had a more powerful engine and strengthened wings with extra pylons for bombs or rockets. It served as a carrier-based fighter and provided close air support for U.S. Marines in the Pacific. Nicknamed “Whistling Death” by the Japanese, it was feared for its deadly dive attacks. The F4U-1D was the first Corsair fully approved for carrier use by the U.S. Navy.
