Description
The Vought F4U Corsair, powered by a 2,000 hp Pratt & Whitney radial engine and the largest propeller ever on a fighter, became legendary. Its inverted gull wing and long-nose design caused visibility and landing issues. These were solved with the F4U-1A, raising the cockpit by 7 cm and replacing the framed canopy with a semi-bubble design. The F4U-1D introduced a full bubble canopy, taller tail wheel, and two underwing pylons for bombs, napalm, or rockets. Entering service in 1944, it became the first fully operational carrier-based Corsair. Squadrons VMF-124 and 213 used it from USS Essex in the Philippines, and it later attacked Japan. About 3,700 F4U-1Ds were built, valued for speed, firepower, and reliability.
