Description
The Very Long Range (VLR) P-51 Mustang operations from Iwo Jima were among the most demanding fighter missions of World War II. Flying from three airfields on the island, the 15th, 21st, and 506th Fighter Groups escorted B-29 Superfortress bombers on missions deep into mainland Japan. Beginning in April 1945, these flights often lasted eight hours and covered vast stretches of open ocean, making them the longest combat missions ever flown by P-51s. Pilots faced enemy aircraft, anti-aircraft fire, severe weather, and navigation challenges. The groups also conducted strikes against the Bonin Islands and maintained combat air patrols over Iwo Jima. Supported by weather aircraft, rescue submarines, and navigation B-29s, the VLR Mustangs played a vital role in securing air superiority and protecting strategic bombing operations in the final months of the Pacific War.
