Description
In 1934, the U.S. Navy issued specifications for a new carrier-based reconnaissance, bomber, and torpedo aircraft. Although not restricted to monoplanes, the winning designs were modern low-wing monoplanes, including the Vought SB2U Vindicator. Entering production in 1937, several variants served, with the SB2U-3 seeing combat at Midway, where it proved outdated. France ordered 40 V-156F versions in 1939, lacking certain U.S. features and equipped with French systems. Assigned to escadrilles AB-1 and AB-3, they initially trained for carrier Béarn but operated from land bases. Heavy losses occurred in May 1940, with final missions flown in June against Italian targets.
