Description
The USN TBF-1C Avenger was a rugged American torpedo bomber that played a major role in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Designed by Grumman, it first flew in 1941 and entered service in 1942 as a replacement for the obsolete TBD Devastator. The TBF-1C featured a powerful Wright R-2600 radial engine, folding wings for carrier storage, and a large internal bomb bay capable of carrying a torpedo or up to 2,000 pounds of bombs. Improved over earlier variants, the “1C” model added wing-mounted .50 caliber machine guns, increasing its firepower. Operated by a crew of three, the Avenger was known for its durability, long range, and versatility, excelling in torpedo attacks, level bombing, reconnaissance, and anti-submarine warfare.
