The Grumman TBF-1C Avenger was the primary United States Navy torpedo bomber during World War II, playing a pivotal role in major Pacific theater battles such as Midway, the Philippine Sea, and Leyte Gulf.
Building on the earlier TBF-1, the "-1C" designation introduced a significant combat upgrade: replacing the single cowl-mounted .30-caliber machine gun with two heavy .50-caliber machine guns in the outer wings, alongside increased internal fuel capacity and heavier armor protection.
