Description

The Vought SB2U-3 Vindicator was a carrier-based dive bomber developed for the United States Navy and primarily utilized by the U.S. Marine Corps during the early years of World War II. Ordered in 1939 specifically to meet Marine requirements for an extended-range scout-bomber, the "-3" variant featured substantially increased internal fuel capacity and larger fuel tanks to dramatically stretch its operational radius.

Powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-1535-02 Twin Wasp Junior radial engine generating 825 horsepower, the aircraft was a two-seat, low-wing monoplane featuring a classic greenhouse canopy and a mix of metal and fabric-covered surfaces. While it represented an important technological step as the U.S. Navy's first monoplane dive bomber, the heavy additions of extra fuel weight and upgraded .50-caliber machine gun armament made the SB2U-3 somewhat sluggish in performance. Vindicators saw notable combat during the Battle of Midway before being swiftly phased out for superior aircraft and relegated to training roles by 1943.
