Description
The SB2U-3 was the final U.S. Navy and Marine Corps version of the Vindicator dive bomber. Introduced in 1941, it featured increased fuel capacity, improved protection, and provisions for external fuel tanks to extend range. Powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-1535 radial engine, it carried forward-firing machine guns, a rear defensive gun, and bombs for dive-bombing missions. SB2U-3s saw combat with Marine squadrons at the Battle of Midway in 1942, where they performed determined attacks despite being considered outdated by newer carrier aircraft.
