Description
During World War II, United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) personnel formed the backbone of American air operations, encompassing pilots, navigators, bombardiers, gunners, mechanics, and support staff. Pilots flew fighters, bombers, and transport aircraft on missions ranging from strategic bombing over Europe and the Pacific to close air support and reconnaissance. Ground crews kept aircraft operational, maintained engines, weapons, and electronics, and managed logistics under often challenging conditions. Women served in the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) program, ferrying aircraft and training pilots. USAAF personnel displayed skill, bravery, and endurance, coordinating complex air campaigns that were vital to Allied victories across multiple theaters of the war.
